The Wednesday Wanderers: Teen Earth Skills Program

Program Intention: This program is designed for students (ages 12-18) that have a genuine passion for exploring various bioregions of Washington State. During our weekly adventures we will harvest wild foods & medicines, tools, clothing while learning about other primitive and homesteading skills. We believe in learning about the nature's bounty seasonally through healthy, adventurous wanders in our beautiful Pacific Northwest landscape.

Potential areas of study include:

  • Native methods of harvesting food, medicine and materials
  • Homesteading Skills: canning, gardening, preserving food, animal processing, cheese making, etc.
  • Native Plants: food, medicine, fiber, plant technologies,
  • Fishing & Hunting
  • Primitive Skills: Hide tanning, natural fiber dyeing, medicinal and edible plants, making clothing from plant and animal fibers
  • Mammals and Tracking
  • Geomorphology
  • Hydrology
  • Plant ID, ecology, anatomy and systematics
  • Natural Products Chemistry

Students can learn about the hazards and resources of the Pacific North West. Lindsay has years of experience helping homeschoolers justify activities to fit Washington State educational requirements. The Wednesday Wanders can count hours towards Science, Occupational Education, PE and some Pacific Northwest History and English.

  • Prairie
  • Riparian

Potential Trips:

We will offer one weekend trip per season and one optional weeklong trip to the Wintercount Primitive Skills Gathering in Arizona. Some ideas are:

  • San Juan Islands
  • Eastern Washington High Desert
  • Cascade Mountains
  • River & Ocean Travel

This program will be staffed by long term staff from Wilderness Awareness School, Johnny Miller and Lindsay Huettman.
